Everything Is Coming Up Roses!

At 4 AM Pacific Time, rehearsals for the opening numbers begin in Pasadena. At 8 the, 126th Rose Parade starts (11 Eastern) and will be broadcast live on ABC, NBC, HGTV, KTLA5, Univision, Red TV, Family Net, Sky Link, and the Hallmark Channel.

Below are a few shots from yesterday’s facilities check sent by ESPN/ABC Senior Video Engineer Roger Crawford. Hopefully, there will be more as the day progresses, but I know Roger will be busy in the truck which today is NEP SS 17. There is more on the photos, so click through and enjoy! -Bobby Ellerbee

The NBC broadcast is probably the smallest out for the parade. We used 5 cameras, plus we had access to the blimp, although not primary control of it. We used a Sweetwater remote truck. Not their biggest. This is the first time we have used EVS for record and playback of clips. Before it was always tape. We used four playback channels, but only two actually went to the audio mixer. In this small truck there were not enough audio channels available. Some floats would be recorded during the commercial breaks and played back during the broadcast. We could playback floats, but not bands, as those channels were the ones with no audio. The two channels with audio played back the open, billboards and prerecorded clips. Now having said all that, we had some of NBC’s top ex-camera people, and TV legend Ed Green mixed the show. I was in EVS.

I liked doing the parade but hated getting up so early. Hard to eat breakfast at 4 AM!
