By Request…How The Yellow Down Marker Appears In Football

In a comment on yesterday’s CBS/NFL video, Pat Phos Martin wondered how the yellow first down markers and blue line of scrimmage marker magically appear on our screens.

By the way, on the Sport Vision site, you can see how other sports graphics work too.

I always thought it was PVI who had introduced it. I remember seeing their credits at the end of the “A” games for that week.

    The magic of television.

Not true, Dwight. The PVI system is only employed by CBS for their B, C and D (and below) level NFL games and is generated from NY (which is quite impressive in itself.) The CBS “A” game, Thursday Night Football and ALL of FOX’s games employ SportVision, while we use SportsMedia’s virtual technology on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

this History is Incorect As PVI Virtual Media Services is the companie behind the virtual yellow-down-line shown on television broadcasts of American football games in the USA and Canada. Founded in 1990 as Princeton Electronic Billboard, PVI Virtual Media Services was a wholly owned subsidiary of Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) with a research and operations facility in Lawrenceville, NJ before being acquired by ESPN in December, 2010.

Despite not being in the industry, I have to say that I’m truly impressed 🙂
