The Kaufman Astoria Studio Stages…You Won’t Believe How Big They Are!
Until I took a good look at this, I didn’t realize how huge Kaufman Astoria was. Until you look, you won’t either! Be sure and click on each of the stage listings for the full effect. The Porsche in the middle of Stage G looks like a Hot Wheels toy in that 26,000 square foot room. Thanks to Dennis Degan for sharing this. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee

Stages & Offices At the core of Kaufman Astoria are seven column-free stages including a mammoth 26,000 square foot stage – the largest east of Hollywood. Our newest addition is Stage K with over 18, 000 square feet. In addition, there are two stages over 12,000 square feet each, and smaller stages…
That looks like where I was station when I was in the army it was called The Army Pictorial Center back then.
They call it “The Big House” for good reason….Nurse Jackie & Orange is the New Black are currently there….great place to work, parking is a drag
I was stationed at the Fort Monmouth Signal Corp School many decades ago, and I took a field trip to Astoria, then known as the U.S. Army Pictorial Center…quite impressive. Fort Monmouth had an advanced TV center, five separate channels (WFM TV) and production studios. Ironically, the place was run by civilian workers.
Lifetime had a presence at Kauffman-Astoria for years, back when they still produced talk shows(like “Healthstyles with Regis Philbin”,,”Hot Properties””Dr Ruth” “Our Home”,,”Handmade By Design”,”The Main Ingredient” “Live From Queens”,”Biggers & Summers”)
Wasn’t Soprano’s at Chelsea Pier?
This is fascinating, thanks for posting! I’d love to tour this facility.
Did an AES-NY section tour there a few months ago, place is AWESOME!!! Joel Spector was there as well.
In 1985, I worked at Reeves/Teletape’s dubbing facility across the street and 2 blocks over from KAS. R/T had moved their dubbing machines from 304 E. 44th Street in Manhattan to Astoria in 1985. The dubbing facility was in what used to be the official Checker Cab sales office, effectively an old car dealership. That former Checker dealership is now a movie theater at the corner of 38th Street and 35th Ave.
I worked there for 12 years at WFAN. Hopefully the did something about the mold, roaches and rats which overran the place.
Nope–NBC was in Midwood, Brooklyn at the site formerly the Vitagraph Studios. NBC Brooklyn Color Studios: Studio 1: 163′ x 70′ x 24′; Studio 2: 130 x 70 x 38′
Is this the same as NBC Brooklyn?
