RCA TK60s In Action…WRVA, Richmond Virginia 1965

This kids show with WRVA cameraman “Sailor Bob” Griggs as host, was built around Popeye cartoons and ran locally from 1959 till 1969. Thanks to Bob’s son, Tom Griggs for sharing this. I think this was shot on film by one of the stations news cameramen.

Ultra Rare! NBC’s Very First Mini Camera…1950 Although RCA and NBC engineers worked together on needed projects, NBC’s engineers were years ahead of RCA’s, in determining what new equipment was needed. RCA did have a mini camera in development at the time, NBC had one too. The NBC version was the round one you see […]

The RCA TJ 48, Television’s Local Market Workhouse

  • October 12, 2013

If you worked in local television in the late ’40s or early ’50s, chances are you remember these…the RCA TJ‑48. It wasn’t just another piece of gear — it was the moment local stations finally got a purpose‑built mobile unit instead of the homemade specials everyone had been cobbling together out of buses, bread trucks, […]

A Very Rare Photo…Future Home Of CBS Blackrock & MORE Thanks to Rick Scheckman, here’s a photo from around 1956 that yielded more than we thought. This was probably taken out of a window of the RCA building at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and here’s what we see. Starting at the very bottom and working our […]

The men and women who shaped American television —producers, directors, engineers, studio crews, and the families of industry legends shared their stories, photos, documents, and memories with me. Many told me the same thing, even the historians for the networks:

“You’re preserving the only institutional knowledge we have left.”

Eyes Of A Generation has always been a collection of history, but now — it has, by default, become a home for the institutional memory of ABC, NBC, and CBS.

In the same way networks kept the videotapes tapes but erased the talent, skill, craftsmanship and even revenue those recorded shows represented…they have lost their histories too!

This is television’s story — created by the people who shaped it and safeguarded here, for those who come after.
