A 1982 Behind The Scenes Look At…’The Price Is Right’
Continuing with today’s ‘Price Is Right’ theme, here’s a quick look at the show in production in 1982. When this was shot at CBS Television City’s Studio 33, Norelco cameras had been around for 17 years and Bob Barker had been the host for 10 years. Bless his heart, Johnny Olson was a great announcer, but as a dancer…not so much! You’ll see. Enjoy and share! -Bobby Ellerbee

This is from a talk show “2 On The Town,” in 1982. Includes an interview with Johnny Olson and his audience warm ups, contestant selection, and pricing games.
My first assignment as a young tech at NBC NY was studio P.A. operator on several Goodson Todman quiz shows, so I got to work directly with Johnny O. Johnny was very busy, several quiz shows at NBC, another at CBS, and a weekly trip to Miami to announce the Gleason show.
One day I ran into Johnny in the 30 Rock lobby. I asked him why he was at NBC, the 8H quiz shows were on hiatus because the studio was being used for election coverage. Johnny confessed that he wanted to “pickup” a few of the phones that were used during the coverage…at that time, you could not own a phone, all phones had to be leased from the phone company. He even asked me to go to his home to install his new phones. What a character.
