CBS Studio 52…The New Yorker Theater, Part 1
In part 2, you see this theater like never before, but take a look here first. Notice the nice big wings and the long camera ramp…you’ll see Gary Moore walk up it in the second part when we visit a very special edition of ‘I’ve Got A Secret’ which originated here along with a lot of other famous CBS shows. This is on the same block as Ed Sullivan’s Studio 50 and goes all the way from W 54 to 53, just behind Sullivan and if you remember from a couple of days back, is also next to the infamous subway transformer.
What I want to know about studio 52: was it ever fully converted to color? The Goodson shows left 52 for 50 which had been converted to color, then Love of Life came to 52 — in color. I wonder if they built full color control room and videotape facilities for Love of Life before they abandoned it altogether. It is not unheard of to park a remote truck next to a studio and use the truck’s control room. They did this at KQED many years ago.
Those steps up to the stage from the audience might have inspired TV City’s Stage 33…?
Thank you so much for the fascinating documents, photos, and memorabilia that you post. Always a great click!
4th camera could had also been used to super the ‘secret’.
I got so excited about this two part look at 52, I forgot to thank our friend Gady Reinhold for these rare 1960 spec sheets. You’ll notice Gary Moore says there were three cameras in the studio, but there were actually 4 according to the sheets. There had to be four, otherwise, we would have never seen him in the control room.
