Soupy Sales: 1964 WNEW
Even though WNEW was the old Dumont owned WABD, it’s still odd to see these old Dumont cameras in use on the ‘new’ Soupy show. The show started in Detroit at WXYZ in ’53 and began to air on ABC in 59. In ’60 Sales moved to KABC and after ABC canceled the show in ’63, he moved to WNEW where he did the show till ’66 and those 260 shows are the ones in syndication.
No, the KTLA period is from 1978 to 1979, and in color. In between the stints on ABC and WNEW, Soupy did some guest appearences, hosted some “Tonight” shows before Johnny Carson was selected as permanent host, and an unsold pilot with Donald O’Connor. His autobiography “Soupy Sez”, published in 2001 (now out-of-print), tells about his career in his own story with all those particular details.
I think the KTLA period was from ’63 to ’66. After the ABC cancellation and before the move to WNEW.
“The Soupy Sales Show”, both the WNEW-TV and KTLA episodes, have been seen on a regular basis on the JLTV-Jewish Life Television Network, as well as available on DVD too.
Looks like the boom operator had bad depth perception.
…Soupy’s show on Saturday afternoon at 12 noon was a riot ! ..I loved how he got away with doing stuff that eventually got him into trouble !
I grew up in Detroit and watched it as a kid at WXYZ-TV. He was so great!!!
