The Final Days Of ‘Tonight’ With Johnny Carson…
This clip ran in Johnny’s last week on the air. I have seen a version of this from the show and in his intro, he said what we all know to be true…that he allowed very little coverage of the backstage elements of the show, which makes this one of those rare times. The studio is Burbank’s Studio 1.
I think this ran on May 19th, just four days before the last broadcast on May 22, 1992. Enjoy and share! – Bobby Ellerbee

Now THIS is what it means to be in show business!
Priceless.
This was on the last show.
Worked with Jeff Sotzing on the final incarnation of the opening titles. Nice guy. He introduced me to Johnny at a restaurant. Johnny gave me “the wink” (seen at the end of this clip). I’ll never forget it.
Why did Johnny retire when he did?
Got To Love the Old RCA Cameras
Great montage….enjoyable
There might be many hosts, some very good, but there will never be another like Johnny. He could make an old lady, or a small child, feel as important as the pope. And he didn’t mind being upstaged, even by a zoo animal. He let the guest — whoever, or whatever, it was — be the star. Gawd, I miss him.
This is a wonderful video that I can watch over and over again. There will never be another Johnny, the king of late night. Too bad that NBC has moved out of the Burbank facility. There is amazing TV history there. Hopefully they do not paint over the images of Johnny, Ed, Doc and others on the walls.
The tonight show has never been the same
Wonderful. Thanks for the memories.
