‘The Match Game’ Follies…Gene Attacks The Camera
In this clip, Gene decides to direct the show “manually” as he tries to persuade the cameraman to give Charles Nelson Reilly a bit more time to prepare his answer “costume”. Enjoy and share! – Bobby Ellerbee
Great scene.
This came up as a suggestion

It must have been a blast to work on that show.
This clip always makes me laugh. Thanks for sharing it 🙂
When the Match Game was recorded in Studio 8H at NBC NYC in 1967, I was on camera 1. Something happened and Gene stood in front of “my” camera talking to it. I realized he want me to pan up/down for YES and Left/right for NO. He asked a series of questions with me answering by panning the Director’s response. It was a great show to work on! At that time we recorded two shows per day. The afternoon shows were always more ‘interesting’ due to lunch and drinks.
The ABC version had some potential, except the network relied way to heavily on its own “stable of stars.”
That was the golden era of the Match Game. That show died with Gene Rayburn, Richard Dawson, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Brett Somers. All the versions that followed were pale imitations.
Before you watch the whole clip….try to guess which cameras are being used…Look at the edge enhancement on the video..is it from a PC60 or PC70?
This had to one of those shows recorded after one of those “lunch” breaks
Very funny…!
