A Rare Surviving Technicolor Camera

A Rare Surviving Technicolor Camera

There were never many of these…I think no more than 30 or so world wide and some of those were rebuilt for other color processes. This camera is in the collection of my friend Carey Williams in Chicago and is valued around $50,000. It is known to have been used on ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ and possibly ‘Gone With The Wind’.

The original 3-strip Technicolor required a ton of lighting. The film was rated at ASA 5 !

Nope Stephen, that’s how big the camera is. What you may be thinking of is the ‘blimp’ that’s often seen installed around the camera. It encloses the entire system to deaden the noisy mechanism of the camera. The ‘blimp’ is enormous.

I don’t care how many megapixels, or extended color space it’s got. Digital processes simply can’t touch the images that came from these cameras.
