Big Weather, July 1974…WAGA Atlanta
In the days before virtual sets and computer graphics, this is how it was done…with big maps. Although the middle board and frame on the US map look like unpainted plywood, they are actually covered in tan felt. Notice the satellite photo on the easel. This is one of 5 Norelco cameras the station had in their studios. Thanks to Craig Cuttner for the picture.
After this came plexiglass maps
WAGA initially had 5 Norelco cameras when they moved from West Peachtree to Briarcliff Rd in 1965. But as I recall, they acquired a 6th Norelco some time around 1966 or ’67. WAGA was a powerhouse production facility in Atlanta in those days. While WSB had their TK-42s, they only had 3 cameras. WAGA was far better equipped in the ’60’s than WSB-TV.
I miss the big maps. When I worked at KYW Philly in ’84 the weatherman would bring us a drawing and we had to set up the maps with magnetic letters and icons. (IATSE rules)
Who’s the woman?
I worked for the NBC station in Miami back when we still had big maps on the wall.
