    I suspect there were a couple of reasons for having low-profile colors on the set:

    1) Makes sure that contestants were the main focus & not the color scheme;

    2) You have to remember that a lot of college kids (and the colleges they attended) still by & large only had black & white sets, it was a real pain in the … in those days to make the color pallet colorful enough for color TV and graytone pleasing enough to be palatable without looking like their mommy dresses them funny

    Interesting that the muted colors of the set hardly exploited the potential for color broadcasting.
