Network Notes…
On October 4, 1950, Atlanta was finally able to bring live network shows to Georgia via the new coaxial cable. Before the AT&T connection, network shows came in the mail as kinescopes and films.
I remember one “live” commercial where they fastened a Timex to the propeller blade of an outboard motor, lowered it into a tank and started it up. After a few minutes, they found out the Watch had come loose and there it was at the bottom of the Plexiglass tank and it was still ticking !
I remember this guy. Did they ever find that Timex watch?
Oct 4, 1950 was one month before I was born.
I find it amazing how the history of “The Network” furnished by AT&T Long Lines shows parallels in television stations being connected to The Network for their shows and the local telephone operating company getting faster access to long distance.
It takes a licking and keeps on ticking!
We used to wait for the REA truck to bring our shows. Imagine when the mountain was covered with snow and ice. (I guess all we could do was reruns.)
