Classic Letterman! Entering 6A From Backstage…February 1982

This great clip is from the second week of the show and is a beautifully shot hand held entrance from Dave’s point of view. For long time fans and NBC vets, there will be many familiar faces here! Enjoy and share! – Bobby Ellerbee

An interesting opening from “Late Night With David Letterman”, from the host’s perspective. Aired February 15, 1982 – the 9th show of the series.

Even the night it aired, I was impressed the cams’ tally lights flickered correctly.

I wonder if they taped it all from the other cameras as well? Would be nice to see the cam.op coming out on the stage 🙂

I cannot love this clip enough! I’ve been a fan of Letterman since his morning show.

I’ve seen this several times……amazing how Letterman set out Late Night to be a far different show from Carson’s Tonight. (mainly due to demands from Carson, of course) And of course Calvert DeForest is briefly visible, and at the 1:33 mark, I believe that’s Letterman’s one-time writer/girlfriend Merrill Markoe asking Dave to take a look at something. All that, and Andy Rooney (who is obviously not too happy to be there). Now look at his show now, While I still enjoy it, it just seems to lack that edginess that was there for a lot of his early run. Oh well, but if you get bored and pine for Letterman’s early years, I recommend the Late Night book….it’s a lot of his Late Night material adapted in book form.
